In todays increasingly volatile political climate, a single narrative is echoing throughout the media and public sphere particularly regarding Muslims and Islam but with little to no discussion with the Muslim community. Never has Islam been so misunderstood, hence Straight-Talk provides a platform for the Muslim voice. But beyond this our non-sectarian platform is all about thought provoking content from a fresh alternative angle, discussing the very foundations of modern society and realities of global politics among many other topics.
Our platform includes our radio show Straight-Talk which is streamed live on a weekly basis on current affairs with some in-depth topics thrown in for good measure. We shall provide all our shows as podcasts for you to download and play, whenever and wherever you want.
You can also join us for “Lounge-Talk” where a group of brothers have an informal chat on local and global issues.
“Straight-Explanations” are our series of explainer videos where we take in-depth complex topics and use audio and animation to explain the unexplainable!
So far we have been financially independent and intend to keep it that way as we do not accept financing from any government bodies and therefore remain editorially independent. However, we welcome donations from individuals to support the cause.
On the authority of Abu Sa’eed al-Khudree (ra) who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (saw) say, “Whoso- ever of you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; and if he is not able to do so, then [let him change it] with his tongue; and if he is not able to do so, then with his heart — and that is the weakest of faith.” [Muslim]
We can bemoan the mainstream media but the internet is still relatively open. Our lack of presence online is our silence and consent and acceptance of the prevailing narrative. We, then, have only ourselves to blame. The general dawah in the West is currently under resourced in terms of digital media content which constantly needs online maintenance, all of which requires time, which members of the community who are in full-time-employment can struggle to offer consistently.
As the brothers and sisters on the team are in full time employment, this work is voluntary and takes up their personal time. We are, therefore, keen to build a larger team particularly on the technical side. We encourage members of the community to join the effort with digital media experience whether it be in motion graphics, editorial, social media, marketing or simply contributing articles or even updating our news section.
Many individual Muslim writers already exist but they are fractured and dispersed into their smaller efforts whilst needing a platform. We aim to provide a central hub giving these dispersed groups and individual writers a platform.
Together we can help the next generation of Muslims to no longer merely inherit a “cultural” Islam but to rediscover Islam ideologically, and with confidence, articulate the case for Islam intellectually to the wider world.
